Royal Boys Basketball Coaches

Coach Griffin - Varsity Coach

Craig Griffin enters his thirteenth year of coaching at Royal High School.  In his twelve years, Coach Griffin has taken the program from a non-playoff team to a perennial playoff team, including back to back CIF Finals and State tournament appearances.   The 2013-14 squad showed great improvement over the year.  With very little Varsity experience, the 13-14 team showed what focused effort can do.  Finishing 5th in a very talented Marmonte League, and pulling off the upset of the playoffs by beating League Champion Camarillo in the first round.  Over the last twelve years, Royal players and teams have broke or set almost every record in the books at Royal High School.

Coach Griffin was an All-Marmonte League and Ventura County player during his high school playing days at Simi Valley High School under Dean Bradshaw.  After helping lead his team to the C.I.F. Finals and 1st round of state play-offs, Griffin continued to play in college.  While at Los Angeles Valley College, Griffin earned All-Conference honors as well as team MVP.  While at LAVC, he earned a basketball scholarship to Fresno Pacific University, where he earned the schools first Academic All-America award.

Griffin and his staff have been working hard at building a winning program that emphasizes trust, loyalty and respect.  The Highlander team is learning to play a fundamental style of basketball.  This, along with unselfish teamwork will be their trademark.  With a “Compete at Everything” attitude, the Highlanders will be looking forward to the challenge. Royal will continue to be a team that looks to take advantage of having some of the best shooters in the county, by continuing to shoot the 3.   With the emergence of the teams post play however, look for the Highlanders to be playing more inside out style than ever before.  Coach Griffin will promise only one thing, these fine young student-athletes will play hard, smart and compete everyday.  Royal High School and the community will be proud of their Highlanders!

Craig, a graduate of Fresno Pacific University, is teaching Health at Royal High School. Coach Griffin lives in Simi Valley with his beautiful wife Jennifer and their 2 year old son Zach.

Coach Griffin is looking forward to the year and again coaching alongside his mentor and father,Rich Griffin (Varsity Assistant Coach).  Add a strong nucleus of returning coaches and the Highlanders will be a program to reckon with.

Richard “chief” Griffin Varsity Assistant

Coach Griffin begins his 36th year of coaching basketball.  After coaching the Sophomore team in years past, Coach Griffin is again joining his son (Craig) on the Varsity team.  While coaching the Sophomore teams, “The Chief” complied a record of 65 and 22 over 4 years with the Highlanders, and has won over 87% of all his games over the last 32 years as a head coach.

As an Assistant Varsity Coach, Chief will work to instill those traits that have characterized his teams over the years and that have come to be synonymous with Royal Basketball.  Hard and untiring work ethics, attention to detail, positive attitudes and fair play will be areas of emphasis Coach Griffin will stress on a daily basis.

Coach Griffin is a 38 year resident of Simi Valley and is currently enjoying retirement.   The Chief spends his free days working at Chief’s Day Care with his wife of 41 years, Linda, also a retired SVUSD Teacher.  Along with their son Craig, the Griffin’s have two daughters.  Jamie is a Physical Education teacher at Jordan Middle School and also referees High School Volleyball and   Melissa teaches Algebra at Valley View Middle School.   The Griffin Clan can now have a 5 on 5 pick up game anytime, as all 3 grandkids: Zach, Lucas and Lexi show athletic promise.   Watch out as these games of 5 on 5 could get heated.

Trevin Johnson - Sophomore Coach

Trevin Johnson is returning to the place where he first made a name for himself as a long distance threat for the Highlanders.   As a first year coach at Royal, Trevin is enjoying his time teaching the players what is takes to become one of the best.   Whether its how to shoot or how to defend, Coach will bring a level of intensity and drive to the table each and everyday.   While playing at Royal, not only was Trevin voted to the All League Team, he was also the schools Career leader in 3 makes and is still in the top 5  for both season and career.   Coach Trevin went on to play at Moorpark College for 2 years while earning his AA.   Coach is currently working on getting his Real Estate License.
